[Mendocino] Hinoki House

The last time when I was in Mendocino was back in the Spring/Summer of 2011/2012. Boy, has it been that long?? This is my first time go to Mendocino in the winter, just for a few days to get away and change of scenery.  A good friend of mine recommended Hinoki House which is a very nice Japanese style house. It’s very conveniently located, not too far from downtown and a short drive to Fort Bragg.

Currently, from Nov to April (excluding holidays) they are doing a special – receive a free night when you stay 2 or more nights.

Hinoki House
was designed and built by master craftsman Thamby Kumaran, his mentor Kihei Ichikawa, Morio Goto, and Michael Singer in 1976 (which is Kumaran’s first project). Traditional Japanese craftsmanship using post-and-beam with many large glasses windows filled with bright and airy rooms that reminds me of the Eichler homes.

Hinoki House has wifi but no cellphone signal with 2 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms – Master queen has a full bathroom with shower, a walk-in closet with hangers, and a cast iron wood burning stove upstairs, and a double bedroom with a kind of “Jack & Jill” bathroom (has two doors, share with guests) downstairs. They have a hairdryer, body soap, hand soap, and towels.

The kitchen is fully equipped with non-stick cooking ware, kitchenware, 4 sets of tableware, Microwave, Toaster, blender, coffee maker/grinder, electric kettle, water filter pitcher, wine opener, baking ware, a square wood cutting board, dish/hand soap, etc.  The things that you might want to bring if you plan to cook, are cooking oil, spices, sauces or dressing (they do have single packs of salt, pepper, sugar and cream).

We went to MacCallum House for a 5-course Prefixed dinner.

Sea Ranch Chapel in Sea Ranch, CA was also built by Kumaran in 1985.

P. S. For family that has small kids and dogs, I recommend you to check out Mar Vista Cottages in Gualala. They have 12 individual cottages (1-2 bedrooms) with a small kitchen and outdoor seating area. The property has chickens (fresh eggs daily at your front door), an organic veggie garden, an outdoor wooden tub, a covered outdoor glasshouse for dinner, and more. The current owners have sold the property to a new couple (wife is a Master Gardener) and they will be taking over in 2021.
